Careful crown reduction to control size and weight while maintaining the natural shape of a mature Blue Atlas Cedar.

The customer had a mature Blue Atlas Cedar positioned close to the boundary and surrounding garden structures. The canopy had become large and heavy, extending over the shed and neighbouring space, raising concerns about safety and long-term management. The aim was to reduce the overall size while keeping the tree healthy and balanced.
We carried out a controlled crown reduction, shortening selected branches back to suitable growth points throughout the canopy. The work was performed using climbing techniques to allow accurate cuts and careful handling above the garden structures below. This reduced weight from the outer canopy and improved clearance around the property while retaining the tree’s natural form.
The tree is now more proportionate to the garden and less exposed to wind loading. The surrounding area has improved light levels, and the structure is easier to manage going forward while preserving the character of the tree. All arisings were removed and the garden left tidy once work was complete.

The best time of year to prune trees depends on the species and the purpose of the pruning. In general, winter and early spring are good times to prune deciduous trees, while summer is best for pruning conifers.
Deadwood is a natural part of a tree’s life cycle. When deadwood becomes excessive it can reduce the phycological processes of the tree. From a risk perspective deadwood can break off unpredictably posing a risk to people, vehicles and properties. These are the main reasons why deadwood should be removed, but if the risk of harm is low, it can be retained as it provides benefits for wildlife.

Once a tree is completely removed and the stump is ground out, it will not regrow. However, if the stump is left in place, some species may send up new shoots unless treated.
